Q&A with Northview 2022" Kyler Vanderjagt
Northview class of 2022 guard Kyler Vanderjagt comes into the 2021-22 season as one of the top prospects in the state, playing for a stacked Northview team with legitimate state title aspirations. Kyler was kind enough to talk to The D Zone about his recruitment and commitment to Belmont, what he hopes to accomplish in his senior season, and what the future has in store for him. Check out his junior season highlights, some of my thoughts on Kyler’s game, and our Q&A below.
As a junior, Kyler averaged 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Kyler has the physical tools, athleticism, and in-game IQ that make him one of West Michigan’s most sought-after recruits. He has the shotmaking skills to fill it up from any spot on the court, and the awareness to pick his spots to either hunt shots or find his teammates for open looks. One quality about Kyler’s game that stands out above others is his in-game demeanor. He’s an even-keeled playmaker who plays an efficient style of basketball without letting in-game emotions dictate his performance.
TB: How did the recruiting process go for you?
KV: "The recruiting process went really well. Honestly, it was a really exciting process being able to speak directly to coaches and build relationships. I enjoyed every bit of it. Knowing that my hard work in the classroom and on the court was paying off."
TB: Why did you choose Belmont? What about their program stood out to you?
KV: "Belmont really stood out from the beginning. I knew they had a good coaching staff and they are a very successful program. They also followed my progress closely throughout the recruiting process. I also loved the school, campus, and facilities. I felt they care a lot about their student-athletes. Finally, being in a city like Nashville is nothing short of amazing."
TB: Did they say how you will fit in their offense/program? What’s their outlook for you?
KV: "Yes, they did. I knew they recruited high-character players, so it was an honor for me to be recruited by them. They also run a highly efficient offensive system and with my ability to get my teammates involved and score on all three levels, I should fit in well with their system."
TB: Do you have any idea of what you want to study at Belmont?
KV: "Yes, I want to be an anesthesiologist. Since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to work in the medical field. Both of my parents specialize in this field, and my god-brother is an anesthesiologist as well. Having the ability to help those in need has always been a priority for me."
TB: What other schools did you have an eye on?
KV: "I had a ton of great offers and interest to play in college and I thank all the coaches for giving me that opportunity. Through the recruiting process, you realize it’s all about fit and what school can provide you with the best opportunity to play and get a quality education."
TB: What are your expectations entering your senior season?
KV: "Championships! My teammates and I want to compete and win our conference, districts, regionals and win a state championship. We also want to have fun, enjoy the ride, and have great memories as a team."
TB: How will you guys approach being ranked one of the top teams in the area coming into the season?
KV: "Well, we know it’s not going to be easy because our opponents are always going to bring their best game. We’ve got a target on our backs this year, so we have to trust each other, play together, and compete at a high level."
TB: What specific parts of your game did you focus on this offseason?
KV: "Leadership. Being a four-year varsity player, I know I bring a lot of experience to our team. My teammates trust me and I feel it’s my role to be a good leader both on and off the court."
