West Michigan Roundup, Tuesday 2/22/22

Best Win: Grandville over Grand Haven 64-62

Grandville picked up their strongest win of the season on senior night defeating Grand Haven by two points. Senior guard Brayden Gable was the hero for the Bulldogs with a late three-pointer to upset the Bucs. With Grand Haven falling, Rockford clinches at least a share of the OK Red title and can clinch an outright title on Friday with a home victory over East Kentwood. The Bulldogs were led by soph. Cameron Regnerus with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Brayden Gable added 13 points. Grand Haven senior Bashir Neely scored 25 points for the Bucs in the loss.

Next Best: Fennville over Covenant Christian 53-48

Fennville continues to be one of the hottest teams in the state winning nine of their past ten games. The Blackhawks made the long trip up north to face fellow district foe Covenant Christian and defeated them by five points. Covenant Christian had not lost since December when they fell to FH Eastern on the road. These teams could potentially meet in district play in one of the most stacked division three districts across the state. The district is loaded with talent including Calvin Christian, Fennville, Covenant Christian, and Potter’s House Christian.

Starting Five (Notable Games):

1. Rockford 53, West Ottawa 51

Rockford escapes an upset bid from West Ottawa at the Black Hole coming away with a two-point victory. The Rams received help from Grandville defeating Grand Haven and are now in the driver’s seat for the OK Red title. The Rams are now (17-2) overall and will play their final game of the regular season at home on Friday against East Kentwood with the outright OK Red title on the line.

2. Buchanan 73, Mattawan 62

Buchanan bounced back from their loss on Friday against Brandywine with a home victory over D1 Mattawan. I may have been a little overzealous on the Bucks last week ranking them 3rd in the small schools before they fell to Brandywine, but Buchanan is still very talented. The Bucks are now (11-6) and winners of ten of their past eleven games. They will have another chance to knock off a SMAC opponent when they travel to St. Joseph on Saturday. Mattawan on the other hand was unable to build off their strong win over Lakeshore on Friday. The Wildcats fall to (9-10) and will host Gull Lake on Friday in another marquee matchup.

3. Coldwater 60, Pennfield 47

Coldwater completes the season sweep of Pennfield without Ethan Crabtree in the lineup. After the loss of their senior star, Coldwater hasn’t been quite the same team with close wins over subpar teams (Parma Western and Jackson NW). I would not have expected them to defeat Pennfield who was in dire need of a strong win. The Cardinals proved me wrong and pulled off the home victory handing Pennfield their third straight loss. Pennfield drops to (11-6) with three winnable games left on the schedule while Coldwater improves to (14-3) with a pivotal road tilt on Friday at Harper Creek.

4. Cassopolis 69, Centreville 64

Cassopolis avenges an early-season loss to Centreville by handing them their first conference loss of the season. Despite the loss, Centreville is still in control to win the Southwest 10 title with a (14-1) record and games against sub .500 teams the rest of the season. If the Bulldogs stumble then Cassopolis will have a chance to share the title. Cassopolis extended their winning streak to 12 games and were led by 16 points from Daishean Jamison and 15 points from Davion Goins. Both teams will be back in action on Thursday with Centreville hosting Bloomingdale and Cassopolis hosting Mendon.

5. Brandywine 47, Lawton 39

There was no let-down game for Brandywine following their win over Buchanan on Friday. The Bobcats defeated a strong Lawton team by eight points to improve to (12-4) and win their sixth straight game. Brandywine will travel to South Haven on Friday prior to a couple of tough matchups next week against Edwardsburg and Lakeshore. Carson Knapp led the Bobcats with 16 points in the victory.
