West Michigan Roundup, Tuesday 12/28/21

Best Win: Reeths-Puffer over West Ottawa 58-55

Puffer entered the season as a potential sleeper after graduating key players from last season such as Kendall Smith and Kaleb Mitchelson. The Rockets are now off to a surprise 3-1 start with a win over West Ottawa. The lone loss came to highly ranked Grand Haven 61-56. Reeths-Puffer will be a team to watch for seasons to come as they receive a lot of production from sophomores Travis Ambrose and Jaxson Whitaker.

Next Best: Hudsonville over Schoolcraft 61-41

One week after a 78-44 beatdown by rival Unity Christian, Hudsonville bounced back with a massive win. Hudsonville was able to take down D3 semi-finalist Schoolcraft by 20 points in the Cornerstone semi-finals. The Eagles played strong defense, knocked down several threes, and cleaned up on the offensive glass to bounce back with a victory. Aden Zank played outstanding in the second half finishing with 18 points while Brayden Szamrej knocked down 4 three-pointers to propel Hudsonville.

Games I Attended:

FH Central 71, Pewamo-Westpahalia 54

In a battle between (2-0) P-W and (2-1) FH Central, P-W jumped out to an early 15-11 lead. Braden Miller was on the board early for P-W with a quick 8 points in the first quarter. FHC completely turned things around going on a 25-5 run to take a 38-20 lead. The Rangers lead would expand to 49-24 by halftime. Shots were falling from everywhere for FHC, especially for soph. Jonas VanderWoude went 3-3 in Q2 scoring 7 points. P-W did outscore FHC 17-10 in the third quarter, but still trailed by 18 points. The final score ended up being 71-54 FHC as the Rangers improve to 3-1. Leading FHC was Jacob Bonnett with 17 points, Jonas VanderWoude with 12 points, and Levi McKenzie plus Conner Milton each had 11 points. P-W was led by Braden Miller’s game high 20 points and Jamison Eklund’s 12 points.

Hudsonville 61, Schoolcraft 41

Schoolcraft, a team that has only lost two games in the past two seasons entered this game with a 2-1 record after falling to Parchment earlier this month. Hudsonville entered 1-2 and coming off a 30+ point loss to crosstown rival Unity Christian. The Eagles got started early with Nate Clark scoring 9 points in the first quarter to give Hudsonville a 20-10 lead. That lead expanded in the second quarter with Brayden Szamrej knocking down a couple three-pointers to give the Eagles a 33-17 halftime lead. The second half featured Hudsonville senior Aden Zank getting in on the action scoring 11 points including a transition dunk. Hudsonville won the game 61-41 led by Zank’s 18 points, Brayden Szamrej finished with 12 points, and Nate Clark added 11 points. Schoolcraft was led by Ty Rykse with 12 points and Shane Rykse with 10 points. Schoolcraft really struggled to rebound and make shots. With two losses now in their first four games Schoolcraft will need to play better in order to make it back to the Breslin. Hudsonville on the other hand has a chance to erase the bad loss against Unity if they can find a way to beat a strong FH Central team on Thursday in the title game.
