West Michigan Roundup, Tuesday 12/21/21

The Tuesday before Christmas provided us with some fantastic matchups across the area.

• The Cornerstone Silver Division semi-finals took place with Northview and Lansing Catholic advancing.
• Unity Christian took the Salad City Classic with a 78-44 win over Hudsonville. The Crusaders have one of the best resumes in the state with wins over Covenant Christian, Calvin Christian, South Christian, and now Hudsonville.
• Forest Hills Eastern defeated Covenant Christian in a slight upset to improve to 2-1. FHE will have a big test against Rockford next Monday at Cornerstone.
• Coopersville’s reloaded roster pulled off the road upset over Zeeland West 59-56. Coopersville, a district champion from last season lost most of their production to graduation, but are once again off to a strong 3-0 start.
• D3 Kalamazoo Christian traveled to Battle Creek Lakeview trying to defeat another D1 school as they did Portage Northern in game 1. The Comets fell 63-56 to the Lakeview Spartans. Lakeview is now 4-1 this season as they brought back nearly all their production from last season.

Lansing Catholic 83, NorthPointe Christian 73

Lansing Catholic and NorthPointe Christian faced off in the first semi-final of the Silver Division tournament. Lansing Catholic had an offensive explosion in the first quarter as they scored 27 points to lead by 14 points early. NorthPointe battled back in the second quarter trimming the halftime deficit to 6 points. The Mustangs took the lead for a brief moment in the third quarter 45-44 before Lansing Catholic’s Alex Watters drained a corner three at the buzzer to regain a 55-53 lead. Lansing Catholic pulled away mid fourth quarter to take a 83-73 win led by 37 points from senior guard Alex Watters. The Cougars also received scoring from Brody Kirkpatrick (13 pts), Luciano Guerrazzi (10 pts), and Dean Jacobs (10 pts). NorthPointe Christian drops to 1-3 and was led in scoring by Mitchell White (24 pts), Kayden Bird (19 pts), and Brayden Wilkerson (17 pts).

Northview 46, Grandville 33

In a highly anticipated matchup of undefeated teams Grandville and Northview matched up at Cornerstone in the Silver semi-finals. Northview with some tenacious defense held Grandville to 1-12 FG in the first quarter to take a 14-3 lead. Jalen Charity was active early for Northview with a vicious put-back slam. Northview extended their lead to 26-12 at halftime with help from two three-pointers off the bench from Grant George. The third quarter is where Northview began to struggle as they were held to only 5 points and their lead dwindled down to 7 points at 31-24. Northview’s star senior Kyler Vanderjagt played fantastic in the final quarter scoring 9 points on 4-5 FG. The intensity ramped up and Northview played strong defense to pull out a 46-33 victory over Grandville. Northview was led by Kyler Vanderjagt’s 19 points on 8-12 FG along with 12 points from Grant George and 8 points from Jalen Charity. Grandville on the losing side was led by Tyson Mann with 8 points but received contributions from sophomore Cameron Regnerus on the defensive end with multiple blocked shots. Northview will take on Lansing Catholic in the title game at Cornerstone on Thursday while Grandville will face NorthPointe Christian in the 3rd place game.
