Games I Attended: Benton Harbor 70, Holland Christian 62

The first game of the division two regional at Three Rivers featured (20-2) Benton Harbor and (15-7) Holland Christian. The Maroons got off to a great start leading 14-6 halfway through the first quarter. 6’9 Jalen Overway and 6’7 Ben Nelson were cleaning up on the offensive boards for Holland Christian. The Maroons led by as many as 12 points in the first quarter. Benton Harbor answered in the second quarter with a 15-4 run led by three-pointers from Trucel SIngleton and Grant Gondrezick. By halftime, the Tigers had pulled ahead with a 33-32 lead. Benton Harbor didn’t stop there as they opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 40-32 lead with 5:33 left in the quarter. The Tigers had increased their defensive pressure and made the Maroon ball handlers very uncomfortable. Benton Harbor held a ten-point lead at 51-41 heading into the final quarter. That ten-point lead ballooned into a 20 point lead with Benton Harbor up 67-47 with under four to play. Holland Christian responded with a 15-0 run to pull within five points, Benton Harbor began to turn the ball over and Maroons capitalized. Grant Gondrezick went to the line for the Tigers with :30 left leading 67-62 and he missed the front end of the 1&1. He made up for the miss with a steal on the other side of the court and made both his free throws to secure the victory. Benton Harbor moves on to the regional final with a 70-62 win led by Grant Gondrezick with 23 points, Trucel Singleton with 19 points including five three-pointers, and Jajuan Walker with 14 points. Holland Christian was led by senior center Jalen Overway with 27 points, Kyle Cannon added 17 points, and Adam Kroeze finished with 13 points.

The second game of the night featured (21-1) Parchment and (15-7) Edwardsburg. The Eddies led 9-6 early with Jacob Pegura knocking down his first four shots from the field. Parchment entered further trouble late in the first quarter when Kofi Barima picked up his 2nd foul. He played limited minutes the rest of the first half and did not attempt a shot. Aaron Jasiak picked up the scoring for the Panthers going 4-6 from the field for 11 points. Parchment led by 19-16 following the first quarter. The Eddies forced turnovers in the early second quarter to open up a 9-2 run taking a 25-21 lead on Parchment. The Panthers battled back and went into halftime tied at 27. A Luke Stowasser dunk for Edwardsburg gave the Eddies a 29-27 lead at the beginning of the third quarter. Trailing 36-35, Jake Moore converted an and-one to give the lead back to Edwardsburg 38-36. The Eddies would add a couple more baskets from Jacob Pegure to take a 44-40 lead into the fourth quarter. The lead expanded to 48-40 with Edwardsburg pulling away, but a Darius Baker putback and Tony Williams three-pointer pulled Parchment within three points with 5:30 to play. Edwardsburg responded with a 5-0 run capped off by an Owen Eberlein three-pointer to lead 53-45 with 3:56 to play. Parchment could not get the stops needed to complete the comeback and their three-pointers stopped falling. The Eddies size played a factor tonight along with Kofi Barima being limited to just two field-goal attempts tonight as he played in foul trouble for a portion of the game. Edwardsburg defeated Parchment 65-55 and will face Benton Harbor in the regional final. The Eddies were led Jacob Pegura with 23 points, Jake Moore with 19 points, and Luke Stowasser with 16 points.
