Best Win: Gull Lake over K-Central 64-62
After falling by 22 points to Otsego on Tuesday, Gull Lake bounced back with a crucial victory. The Blue Devils defeated Kalamazoo Central for the second time this season virtually clinching the SMAC-East division as long as they win one of their last two games against BC Central and BC Lakeview. Gull Lake also put an end to K-Central’s seven-game winning streak. The Blue Devils seem to be one of the more unpredictable teams in the area this season. They will be back in action on Tuesday hosting St. Joseph while K-Central will host Portage Northern.
Next Best: Decatur over White Pigeon 57-49 (OT)
Decatur has had a sub-par start to the season entering Friday’s game with a (4-6) record. The Raiders earned their best win of the season with a stunning overtime victory over a talented White Pigeon team. The Raiders improve to (5-6) and will have a chance to prove themselves next week with matchups against Cassopolis and Comstock, two of the top three teams in the conference. White Pigeon continues to struggle falling to (5-5) and losing four of their past five games.
Starting Five (Notable Games):
1. Holland Christian 53, Coopersville 39
The Maroons stay hot, winning for the fifth time in their past six games. Holland Christian is now (6-2) in OK Blue which puts them two games back of undefeated Unity Christian. The Maroons will have critical road matchups next week at West Catholic and Spring Lake. Coopersville continues to decline after their early-season start at (7-1). The Broncos have now lost four straight but will have an easier schedule next week against Hamilton and Fruitport.
2. West Ottawa 50, East Kentwood 31
West Ottawa avenges an early-season loss against East Kentwood with a double-digit home victory. The Panthers are now above the .500 mark with a (7-6) record. They have also won five of their past six games. East Kentwood drops to (3-9) but is loaded with young talent that should help them contend next season. The Falcons will look to end their three-game losing streak on Saturday against Henry Ford at The Showcase.
3. Lakeshore 44, St. Joseph 42
Lakeshore comes away with a two-point victory in a crucial game for the SMAC-West division title. The Lancers are now (5-1) with two games to play while St. Joseph drops to (3-2) with three games to play. The Lancers need to win one of their final two games against Mattawan and Portage Northern to secure the title. Lakeshore was led by soph. Jack Carlisle with 13 points and fresh. JJ Frakes added 12 points. The future looks bright for the Lancers as next year they will return most of their production from this season with the exception of star wing T.J. Mitchell.
4. Jenison 63, Grandville 61
Jenison picked up their first conference win of the season by defeating Grandville on the road. Senior Caleb Dean had a huge game for the Wildcats scoring 27 points in the victory. Jenison improves to (5-9) on the season and snaps a seven-game losing streak. Grandville continues to struggle dropping their fifth straight game after a (6-2) start. Things won’t get easier for the Bulldogs as they will have to travel to first-place Rockford on Tuesday night.
5. Brandywine 45, Berrien Springs 38
Brandywine continues to play strong basketball winning their sixth game in their past seven attempts. The Bobcats also moved ahead of Berrien Springs to take over first place in the BCS Red division with a record of (3-1). Brandywine will have a crucial game next Friday against Buchanan where they can clinch at least a share of the conference title.
