Walled Lake Central earns win over Romulus at The D Zone Rising Teams Classic
AUBURN HILLS - Walled Lake Central won the second game of The D Zone Rising Teams Tip-off Classic 66-49 over Romulus.
WL Central jumped out the lead early and never looked back, draining 3-pointers and using their physicality to out-muscle Romulus.
Both teams displayed athleticism, but Central’s hot shooting was too much for a rebuilding Romulus squad.
Walled Lake Central MVP: Jake Nellett, 6-5 Sr.
Nellett was a jack-of-all-trades, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the first half. With Central building a big lead throughout the second half, he was able to rest. Nellett is a great shooter who can run the point and score in the paint. Coming back from illness, his speed was a little off, but overall he’s a must-see player for college recruits in the area.
Romulus MVP: Kayven Medley, 6-1 Sr.
Medley was lively on offense and defense, leading the team with a game-high 19 points. He displayed athleticism as a lean, but lengthy guard with a nice 3-point stroke. Medley could put up big numbers this season as Romulus looks to develop an inexperienced roster.
Team Analysis:
Walled Lake Central
Central displayed a balanced scoring attack with many 3-point shooters, height and solid ball-handling. They have a tough district with Orchard Lake St. Mary’s included, but this team is definitely worth a watch. Preston Dado (6-3) scored nine points, stretching the defense with a smooth shooting stroke. Anthony Camacho (5-8) led the offense with crafty playmaking - instilling confidence in the rest of the team. Center Gio Charles (6-6) provided great defense, and even had a put-back dunk in the fourth quarter.
Romulus
Romulus certainly doesn’t have a vintage squad - like from the Nate Oats days - but they battled hard and fought until the final whistle. They have some size and a couple long guards who shot well, but overall, this will be a rebuilding year for a storied program.
