Recap of Mt. Pleasant's 44-12 win over Saginaw

Coming into Friday night both the Saginaw High School Trojans and the Mt. Pleasant High School Oilers sat at 0-2 and only one team could get their first win of the season. The Oilers of Mt. Pleasant would be this team as they defeated the Trojans 44-12.

Both teams started slow in the first quarter as Mt. Pleasant would score first when Jackson Ostrowsky would find Edward Wentworth on a shuttle pass that would go for six. Following the point after attempt the Oilers would lead 7-0. On the very next drive Tony Martin of Saginaw would find paydirt on a read option up the middle. The two point conversion would be no good.

The slow start wouldn’t phase Mt. Pleasant though. Following a punt that pinned Saginaw inside their own five, Joseph Ostrosky would step in front of a DelMichael Jefferies pass and return it to the end zone for six. This would end the quarter with Mt. Pleasant leading 13-7.

“We started slow,” said head coach Jason McIntyre, “but our defense and special teams really helped us to be able to pull away in the second quarter.”

The defense would force one interception and recovered two fumbles on kickoffs in the second quarter. These would be four of the eventual five turnovers forced by the Oilers for the game.

“We did a good job making plays on defense, but we have have to start making plays on offense after those turnovers,” said McIntyre, “We aren’t all the way there yet, but that second quarter was the best we played all season.”

Not only was the second quarter good on defense, but it was also good on offense for the Oilers. Jackson Ostrosky would connect with three different receivers for three touchdowns in the second quarter. The first being roll out right when Ostrosky would find his tight end Tyler Huenemann for six. The second would come after a fumble was forced on the kick off and this time Ostrosky would find senior Jayden Perry on a bubble screen pushing the score to 27-6. Following an interception, Ostrosky would find Spencer MacGregor for an 18 yard touchdown. The Oilers would lead 34-7 heading into halftime.

“It felt good to go out there and feel some chemistry with this team,” said Jackson Ostrosky, “This team has really welcomed my brother and I and to get this win is big for us,” said Ostrosky on his performance.

Coming out of halftime the third quarter would go much like the first as the teams exchanged punts until the end of the quarter. Though there was no scoring Saginaw did finally start to move the ball on the tough Oiler defense.

“They went to more read option in the second half,” said Coach McIntyre, “I wasn’t happy with our defensive performance on their first drive of the half, but they didn’t score so I can be too mad.”

After an explosion of offense in the second quarter, the entire second half seemed tame. It would take until the end of the third quarter when Jackson Ostrosky would find MacGregor again for a big 58 yard gain to end the quarter. Mt. Pleasant would lead 34-6.

Following the big play Kevin Davis would punch the ball in from 7 yards out to put the running clock rule into effect as the Oilers would lead 41-6. The very next play for the Trojans offensively though would be a big one. Tony Martin would take the hand off and sprint 65 yards to the end zone to cut into the Oilers lead. The two point conversion would fail once again making the score 41-12 in favor of the Oilers.

Mt. Pleasant would tack on a field goal late in the game to add to their lead. Following a fumble by Saginaw the Oilers would find themselevs in the win column for the first time this seaosn.

Mt. Pleasant defeated Saginaw 44-12 and moved to 1-2 on the season as Saginaw would fall to 0-3. Mt. Pleasant takes on rival Midland this upcoming week as Saginaw will take on Bay City Western on Friday, September 15th.
