Brandoen Guyton hosted a fantastic scrimmage Saturday at MSA Fieldhouse in Grand Rapids.

Games were constantly being played on five courts as some of the state’s best teams met for a very early-season clash.

This list features players who may not be their team’s leading scorer, or most hyped player, but impressed on Saturday.

Here are five players that really stood out at the event:

Josh Bascom, 6-3 Fr., Rockford

Bascom picked up an offer at Ferris State this summer before he had even taken a high school class. That decision was proven smart Saturday when Bascom consistently looked like one of the best players on the court. He was active, aggressive and proved he’s a versatile scorer with the court vision of a point guard. He flew around snagging rebounds and looked like he could guard almost any position on defense. He has special-player upside.

Adur Mawut, 6-3 Sr., Grand Rapids Christian

The Eagles were so good last season that some players slipped through the cracks. Mawut is one of those players. As a senior, he will finally get to showcase his wide range of skills. Mawut can jump out of the gym and he’s relentless around the basket. He sported a nice mid-range jumper and solid ball-handling skills. Mawut tipped in several missed shots, too quick and athletic for opponents to get a body on when going up for a rebound. Mawur is one of the reasons why GR Christian will remain title contenders again this year.

Markese Murray, 5-10 Jr., Lansing Sexton

Part of a great backcourt, Murray is solidly built and a great shooter who can really get hot and go on a scoring burst. He scored seven unanswered points against GR Christian, using his quickness, strength and shooting skill to dominate a two-minute stretch. Keyshawn Summerville (5-11) gets most of the hype, and he is an incredible talent, but Murray will be a key piece if Sexton is to make a deep postseason run.

Cassius Bont, 6-2 Jr., Byron Center

College coaches need to take note of this big, strong point guard. Bont can run the show, hit 3-pointers and get to the rim. He plays with passion and is a fierce competitor. Bont is quick for his size and found little issue getting to the second level of a very good East Lansing defense. Bont checks the eye test and could take a big step this season and watch his recruiting soar.

Jaevian Barnes, 6-7 Sr., Portage Northern

Talk about length and athleticism, Barnes showcased that in droves Saturday. Barnes has some of the longest arms I’ve seen, and he uses them to clean up the glass and swat shots into the fifth row. He’s also fast, which allows him to beat most other bigs down the court. His skillset is still raw, but he has all the upside a player could ask for.
