Michigan HS Basketball: Hutson, Elam make D1 college decisions
East Lansing star Cameron Hutson and Adrian sensation Stevie Elam announced Tuesday their Division 1 college decisions.
Hutson chose the Saint Louis Billikens, one of the best mascots in sports. Hutson, a 6-5 shooting guard, has emerged as one of the premier wings in the Midwest after a number of impressive performances over the past two seasons.
His father, Andre Hutson, played for Michigan State as an athletic forward. Hutson played for the Spartans from 1997-2001, helping the school earn its second national championship in 2000.
Cameron will likely be a Mr. Basketball candidate after leading East Lansing to two straight Division 1 quarterfinal appearances. Hutson is an elite shooter who can get hot and stay hot throughout a game. He has a quick release and almost effortless feel for the game. He has unlimited upside at the next level.
Elam, another top senior in the state, picked Wisconsin-Milwaukee less than two months after receiving an offer. Elam is a powerful guard who uses his strength to fight through defenders and gracefully finish at the rim.
Also a great outside shooter, Elam offers the versatility D1 programs are looking for. Both Hutson and Elam still have untapped upside, which makes them even more intriguing at the next level.
Elam will try to lead Adrian on a deep tournament run in Division 2 this winter, after earning all-state honors as a junior.
Michigan’s 2025 class is one of the deepest in state history, and that’s with a handful of top prospects leaving for out-of-state prep schools. There could be up to 20-30 D1 players from the class, which has been almost unheard of in recent years.
The 2024-25 boys basketball season begins November 11, with games starting November 25.
