Grand Rapids Catholic Central dominates Detroit Country Day in division four title game
Joe Silveri to Jace Williams has been a deadly combo for Grand Rapids Catholic Central all season and nothing changed in the division four state title game.
Silveri found Williams four times, three times for a touchdown and 62 yards. The connection was on fire all night and helped GRCC (13-1) bring home their second title in four years.
“This really felt good,” Silveri said. “This is just a crazy feeling.”
Silveri completed 15-of-22 passes for 236 yards and four touchdowns. Silveri also ran for 139 yards and two scores in the 44-0 win over Detroit Country Day (13-1)
“It was all for the seniors,” Williams said. “They were our leaders and they played their hearts out just like we did.”
The Silveri to Williams connection will be alive and well next season as well as both are underclassmen. Silveri a sophomore and Williams a junior will dominate MHSAA defenses for at least one more season.
“Joe is a great kid,” GRCC head coach Todd Kolster said. “He came in and made himself coachable.”
The Cougars scored 18 points in the first quarter and never looked back.
Williams caught two in the first quarter and Silveri broke off a 53-yard run. All three point after attempts failed.
Williams also tied a state finals record with three receiving touchdowns in a game.
“I didn’t know that,” Williams said with a smile on his face. “That is awesome.”
The two scores that did not come from Williams or Silveri came from Drew Gommesen who Silveri hit in stride for a 23-yard score in the second quarter and defensive linemen Jake Passinault intercepted a pass on a trick play and returned it for 17-yard score.
With the win GRCC brings home their fifth title overall and moves to 5-2 in state finals games.
