Grand Blanc rallies past Whitehall at The D Zone Showcase
BIRMINGHAM - Grand Blanc stormed back from a double-digit first-half deficit to defeat Whitehall 78-67 Friday night at Groves for The D Zone Showcase.
After a slow start, Grand Blanc rallied back after halftime with quick buckets set up from their full-court pressure.
Both teams impressed with their tenacity, fighting for rebounds and gliding through the lane to finish through traffic.
Grand Blanc MVP: Caseton Sendry (6-2)
He did not enter the game until midway through the third quarter, but the vibe completely changed when he entered, immediately helping the Bobcats take the lead and not look back. Despite limited playing time, this college prospect finished the game with xx points while flashing the scoring and play-making prowess that college coaches love. An emotional leader who helped the rest of the team get the spark they needed.
Whitehall MVP: Camden Thompson (6-6)
Thompson has signed with Western Michigan for football and basketball. He was nearly unguardable in this game, finishing with xx points while showcasing a versatile game. Thompson’s ability to now stretch the floor with 3-point jumpers makes him a potent weapon. He’s arguably the best rebounder in the state, but his offensive games is what will draw fans throughout the state.
Team Analysis:
Grand Blanc
Depth is the key to Grand Blanc’s game, as they had 10 players find the scoresheet. Sendry is the catalyst as the team’s top playmaker and scoring weapon. Geo Cannon (6-3) scored 10 points. He hit an outside shot and did a nice job running the offense with Sendry sitting out the first half. Senior Donnie Huddleston (6-2) proved he’s not just a shooter, scoring 11 points and displaying a more aggressive and physical scoring style. He’s a senior to watch as JUCO and D3 colleges fill their rosters this summer/spring. Nate Szcembarg (6-1) led with 18 points, showcasing his athleticism and patience as an undersized post. Jayden Higgins (6-5) added some length to battle in the paint and add six points. If Cannon or sophomore Isaiah McCree (5-10) can step up as a consistent third scorer, this could be a sleeper team come March.
Whitehall
Thompson is going to put up elite numbers all season. He’s tall, strong and super athletic. He’s a must see player across the state any time he takes the court, and could be a rare player who starts in both football and basketball at the next level. Kal Koehler (6-4) is a perfect second scorer, who lit it up for 24 points Friday night. He’s another versatile scorer with a really nice shooting stroke. Point guard Finn Muller (5-11) added nine points with solid leadership and strength from the backcourt.
