GROSSE POINTE - Grosse Pointe North won a physical battle Saturday 58-42 against Adrian in The D Zone Playoff Tune-up.

The Norsemen are a D1 sleeper, while Adrian has high hopes of a long run in D2, and the two top-100 teams left everything out on the court.

GP North just had too much muscle for Adrian to overcome.

GP North MVP: R.J. Williams, 6-7, Sr.

Fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, but he did plenty of damage while on the court. He took advantage of his massive height and bulk advantage by scoring 13 points and making life miserable for Adrian on the boards. Williams has really progressed since the beginning of the season, showcasing more aggressiveness and better feet on offense. He’s a sleeper and a potential steal in both football and basketball.

Adrian MVP: Stevie Elam, 6-2, Sr.

Just a tremendous high school player. Looks almost identical to Trey McKenney, which had lots of people talking. The Wisconsin-Milwaukee commit could be a Mr. Basketball candidate on a team that doesn’t have a ton of other scoring options - or any height. Elam scored 23 points in the game despite constant double and triple teams.

Team Analysis

GP North

Senior guard Leo Perettie (6-0) is the heart and soul of the team. He’s fearless with the ball, whether he’s shooting from deep or attacking the basket. He’s a tremendous leader who plays hard every play on both ends of the court. He scored a game-high 24 points against Adrian. Overall, this team has a great blend of size and skill. They have to compete against Cass Tech, Detroit King, GP North and GP South in their district, but could have an upset or two in store.
