Country Day outguns Romulus in a shootout. Win it 92-83
Detroit Country Day (11-5) made the trip to Romulus high school (12-4) for what was likely the biggest game on Thursday, February 23 in Michigan.
Country Day is a team that is good now, but could be great in the near future. They have 7 players that are either 2020 or 2021s, and most of those freshman/sophomores are in their main rotation.
Romulus is a team that is made up of predominately seniors. They also picked up a couple transfers that recently became eligible that make them an even tougher team.
The game started off as a track meet as both teams were taking quick shots and making them. Country Day held a 28-24 lead. Country Day was being led by 2021 Julian Roper, 2020 Wendell Green and 2018 shooter Dylan Sandhu in the first quarter. 22 of Romulus's first quarter points came from Randy Frison (3 threes), DJ Lundy and Keyon Wright.
The pace in the second quarter continued to be high as nether team seemed very content with just holding the ball for more than 15 seconds. Romulus managed to start shredding Country Day's defense with passes and took a 52-48 halftime lead. Keyon Wright had a strong half for Romulus, scoring a efficient 16 points. Wendell Green had a solid quarter as well for Country Day.
The 3rd quarter was the slowest of them all, but even that quarter was up tempo compared to most games I have covered. Country Day regained the lead 67-62. Romulus began struggling with foul trouble with a couple key players, and them losing those players cost them offensively.
The 4th quarter was again a back and fourth track meet. The Country Day backcourt was a little more composed than Romulus's and they made more plays down the stretch while taking care of the ball. The Yellowjackets pulled out a entertaining 92-83 victory.
2020 point guard Wendell Green filled the stat sheet, posting 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. The 2020 point guard continues to show why he is a D1 level talent. 2021 Julian Roper added 17 points and 7 rebounds. Roper too looks like a D1 level talent, and has the frame and production at that age that makes him really stand out. He looks like he could be a top 5 player in the state for 2021. Kolin Demens added 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench for Country Day. He was huge in the second half. 2018 Dylan Sandhu added 14 points and continued to highlight his shooting ability as he knocked down 3 threes. 2021 Makylind Manciel, another starter, added 12 points as well for Country Day.
DJ Lundy and Keyon Wright both had 19 points to lead Romulus. Randy Frison had 14 points. 6'8 Jerome Bivins added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Bivins reportedly recently became eligible and he looks like a very intriguing senior big prospect for non D1s to come see. Muhammad Ceesay added 9 points and 10 rebounds as well. He is another intriguing senior prospect for colleges to come see.
